SURVIVORSHIP, GENERAL  

National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship: Advancing Public Health Strategies is a public health effort to address the issues faced by the growing number of cancer survivors. It identifies and prioritizes cancer survivorship needs and proposes strategies for addressing those needs. From the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Lance Armstrong Foundation, April 2004.  

National Organizations that Offer Services to People with Cancer and Their Families is a free fact sheet from the National Cancer Institute.

Facing Forward: Life After Cancer Treatment is a free comprehensive booklet covering all aspects of survivorship. From the National Cancer Institute.

NCI Cancer Bulletin has numerous articles on survivorship. Newsletter from the National Cancer Institute. To browse archives, type "survivorship" in the search field.

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION  

"Bearing Witness to Cancer" is a first-of-its-kind undergraduate course designed to educate pre-medical students about the cancer experience. Includes biology, epidemiology and social science, as well as personal memoirs. The goal is to enhance the sensitivity of future practitioners to the broad bio-psychosocial needs of cancer patients. Developed by the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. Go to the Ulman Cancer Fund home page and type "Bearing Witness to Cancer" in the search field.

A LION IN THE HOUSE Continuing Education Program offers separate continuing education programs for nurses and social workers. Both programs are approved for four contact hours..

Beyond the Cure Teleconferences include information from leading national experts on a variety of issues of interest to cancer survivors and their families. Hosted by the National Children’s Cancer Society's Beyond the Cure Program.

CANCERCARE Telephone Education Workshops are free one-hour conference calls with cancer experts from around the country.

Association of Oncology Social Worker’s (AOSW) Online Continuing Education Courses are self-directed courses developed by the AOSW approved for six continuing education contact hours. Program provide essential knowledge, skills, and helpful links to Web-based resources. Work at your own pace.

University of Colorado Cancer Center offers Web-based courses to refresh your knowledge in hematological malignancies, from fundamentals to recent advances. Register online. Earn Free CME credits and print your CME certificate upon completion. The site also allows you to Ask the Expert about difficult cases, and to deduce differential diagnoses with suggested investigations based on signs and symptoms. The site is funded by the Centers for Disease Control.

 
LEGISLATION  

Cancer Survivorship Research & Quality of Life Act of 2006 would amend NCI's cancer control program to (1) include cancer survivorship research activities, (2) establish a Division of Cancer Survivorship within NCI, and (3) expand and coordinate cancer survivorship research activities at NCI-designated cancer centers.

Conquer Childhood Cancer Act of 2007 proposes to authorize $100 million over 5 years to develop grants for research fellowships in pediatric cancer for clinical and translational investigators; fund a population-based national childhood cancer database; and award grants to childhood cancer organizations to raise public awareness of best available therapies for pediatric cancers

Patient Navigator Outreach & Chronic Disease Prevention Act will fund navigators to assess patient and community needs and guide patients through a complicated and fragmented health care system.

ADVOCACY  

LIVESTRONG Young Adult Alliance is a coalition of organizations that promotes research and the delivery of patient care, generates awareness of young adult survivorship issues, serves as a voice for young adults with cancer, and advances community-based programs and services.

National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship advocates for quality cancer care and empowers survivors. Run by survivors. NCCS's "Cancer Advocacy Now!" is a network that involves constituents from across the country in federal cancer-related issues. NCCS’s award-winning "Cancer Survival Toolbox" helps survivors access quality follow-up care.

The Intercultural Cancer Council (ICC) promotes policies, programs, partnerships, and research to eliminate the unequal burden of cancer among racial and ethnic minorities and medically underserved populations.

The Children's Cause for Cancer Advocacy is an organization of individuals touched by childhood cancer either directly or through a loved one. They work to make a difference through activities ranging from raising awareness to raising funds to testifying before Congress to participating as board members.
