If you are planning an awareness event for young adult cancer survivors, thank you for being on the front lines of this important work. As
you know, new reseach reveals that most adolescent and young adult cancer survivors are unaware of the health risks they face, the late effects they may experience, and their need for lifelong follow-up care. Many health care professionals are unaware of these facts as well. Consequently, cancer survival rates among adolescents and young adults have not improved significantly in the last 25 years despite steady improvement in survival among other age groups.
Help save lives in your community by planning a fun/educational event to educate and empower young adult cancer survivors. Your event can be whatever you make it. It can last from a few hours to a full day. Make it fun. Have it reflect the needs and interests of your community. You may want to plan it for National Cancer Survivors Day, National Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week or another special time. See 2007 National Health Observances.
SURVIVOR ALERT has developed the following toolkit to help you put on an event that has impact. Choose the ideas and materials that best fit your goals and community. Most of the materials can be customized with your local information, then duplicated and distributed. If you'd like to have your own logo replace the SURVIVOR ALERT logo, contact Suzanne Froelich.
