Fertility Facts

Some types of cancer treatment can affect a person’s ability to conceive a child or maintain a pregnancy. Not all cancer treatments harm fertility, but permanent changes in reproductive function are now recognized as one of the most prevalent side effects of cancer therapy. It's smart to learn about your fertility risks and reproductive options as early as possible. Here are some online resources to help you:

American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Online Patient Guide: Fertility Preservation. Fertility options that are available before cancer treatment.

Fertile Hope Foundation:   Provides overview of cancer treatment-induced fertility risks and preservation options before, during and after treatment. Also offers programs of awareness, education, financial assistance, research and support. Fertile Hope has partnered with the Lance Armstrong Foundation to provide free brochures about cancer and fertility.

American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM):  The ASRM formed a special interest group on fertility preservation in men and women after chemotherapy.  See its Patient Fact Sheet on Cancer and Fertility Preservation.

Pregnant With Cancer:   An international network of women who have faced cancer and pregnancy. The group can connect a newly diagnosed patient with a woman who has gone through a similar cancer and pregnancy. This woman can lend her support, share her experience and offer hope during a difficult time.

The Cancer and Fertility Society:   The Society's mission is to improve the lives of patients with cancer or other conditions that inhibit their ability to conceive, by increasing their chances of fertility, improving treatment methods, and educating cancer experts.

Resolve:  The National Infertility Association has national and local area affiliates, who can answer your questions and provide information about infertility and family-building options.

Young Cancer Spouses:   Brings together young spouses of adults with cancer to share information, support and experiences.
