5 Things to Know

As a young adult cancer survivor (YAS), you have overcome incredible obstacles to get where you are today!  You have lived a lot, learned a lot, and that knowledge has given you staying power.  Now, as your journey continues through survivorship, there are new risks and challenges you may face as a result of your previous disease and/or treatment and its late effects.
Studies show that most young adult cancer survivors are unaware of these risks and challenges.     By knowing what you are up against, you can take charge of your health. As a young adult cancer survivor, you should know:

1.  You are at risk for certain problems, or late effects, linked to your disease and/or treatment. “The more information you know about your previous medical treatment and its late effects, the better prepared you will be to meet any challenges the future may bring.” (Beyond The Cure)
2. You need cancer follow-up care for life.
3. Getting help with emotional, educational, and other cancer-related issues is just as important as your cancer treatment.  And, you are not alone!  There are other young adult survivors ready to meet, greet, and welcome you into a growing network of support.
4. Health insurance is a high priority for you even though young adults in general are more likely to lack health insurance than any other age group. .
5. You have special benefitsjust for you.
